5 Skincare Tips for Aging Skin

Aging is an inevitable part of life. This reality is not something we can escape, but with the right selection of hardworking products and proper habits, we can help delay aging. With the rapid loss of collagen and elastic tissue as we age, we need to look for ways to hasten skin’s cellular renewal and, ultimately, make skin more firm and supple.

Now, it’s never too early to start using products (see: sunscreen) to visibly reduce signs of aging. Whether you’re in your early 20s or already in your 50s, there are a lot of tips and tricks available to help care for aging skin.

Wear SPF religiously.

Whether you’re spending more time indoors or outdoors, wearing sunscreen every day helps protect the skin from intense UV rays, delays skin aging, and even decreases the appearance of hyperpigmentation. For an all-day protection guarantee, don’t forget to reapply every four hours! For a beginner’s guide to sunscreen, read here

Don’t forget to also stay away from the sun during peak hours! For those working from home, avoid working too close to the windows because UVA rays go through the glass and barrier.

Look out for these hero ingredients.

To delay aging, look out for skincare products formulated with collagen and fermented ingredients like lactic acid and probiotics. With aging comes slower cell turnover and an imbalance in melanin production, which also serves as a defense mechanism against UV rays. Include these hero ingredients which reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for overall smoother skin.

Exfoliation is key!

In essence, exfoliation helps slough layers of dead skin cells and naturally occurring lipids for a more rapid regeneration of skin to reveal softer and brighter skin. But be wary of too much exfoliation since your skin won’t be able to retain moisture or protect itself from external irritants. Just don’t overdo it! Need a more comprehensive guide to exfoliation? Try out retinol.

Found in many top-selling skincare products, retinol, which is a derivative of Vitamin A, is a potent ingredient proven to visibly eliminate wrinkles and other evident signs of aging. Still, it can be tricky to navigate, especially for those with sensitive skin. Without a professional’s help, applying retinol can cause side effects like dryness, redness, and peeling. Aging may be unavoidable, but there are ways to address it like including retinol in your routine.

Don’t destroy your skin barrier in the first place.

Don’t overdo your skincare products! Even if skincare FOMO is real, you don’t always need a whole lot of products to take care of your skin. Master the basics, like choosing the right cleanser for your specific skin type. Some people don’t understand the damage that cleansers can do; the wrong cleanser can really wreak havoc on your skin.

Aging may be unavoidable, but there are ways to address it—avoiding the sun, mastering the basics of skincare, and including superstar ingredients like retinol in your routine.
